The purpose of this session is to provide the regulatory information necessary in 1926 Subpart P to meet the knowledge requirements for a competent person. Students will participate in hands-on learning activities as well as lecture and practical application exercises in order to develop the skills necessary to safely erect and inspect soil protective systems: 

  • Definitions of excavation components and protective systems  
  • Competent person requirements for subpart P - Excavations  
  • Utility locations, clearance distances and dig tickets  
  • Access and egress from trenches and excavations  
  • Exposures to falling loads and hazardous atmospheres  
  • Stability of adjacent structures   
  • Required inspections  
  • Requirements for protective systems less than 20’ deep 
  • Design of sloping and benching systems  
  • Design of support systems and shield systems  
  • Design of other protective systems  
  • Soil classification system  
  • Definitions and requirements for determining:   
    • Stable rock 
    • Class A soil 
    • Class B soil 
    • Class C soil  
  • Sloping and benching requirements 
  • Timber shoring for trenches and their minimum requirements 
  • Aluminum hydraulic shoring for trenches 
  • Trench Shields
